Whether you're a competitive lifter or an amateur gym-goer, attempting a new personal best requires proper preparation. Here's how to maximize your PR attempts.

  1. Stay Active Before Your PR

Light movement the day before your PR attempt helps prepare your body for the upcoming challenge. Like sports teams doing walk-throughs before competition, these sessions prime you mentally and physically. Avoid complete rest days immediately before your attempt.

  1. Maintain Your Regular Routine

Don't introduce new gear, supplements, or equipment on PR day. If you plan to use knee sleeves, a belt, or other equipment, incorporate them during your training phase. Practice with your gear well before the big day to ensure comfort and familiarity.

  1. Exercise Patience

Take a methodical approach to your PR attempt:

  • Perform slow, progressive warm-up sets
  • Rest 3-5 minutes between sets
  • Make manageable intensity increases
  • Allow proper restoration of phosphocreatine (PCr)
  • Enable clearance of acetylcholine (ACh) waste

Listen to your body. If you're not feeling optimal, it's better to postpone your PR attempt to another day when you're at your peak. Remember, mental readiness is crucial for peak performance.

Focus on controlling what you can:

  • Track what works during training
  • Identify patterns on your best performance days
  • Replicate successful conditions
  • Stay consistent with your preparation routine

When the moment arrives, take a deep breath, brace properly, and give it your all.
