MRI scans can be intimidating, but knowing what to expect helps ensure a successful procedure. Here's what you should know before getting an MRI:

Noise and Duration

  • MRIs produce loud banging sounds (82-118 decibels)
  • Use earplugs or headphones for protection
  • Procedures can last 15-60 minutes
  • Eat a light snack and use the bathroom beforehand

Comfort and Anxiety

  • Some people experience claustrophobia
  • Keep eyes closed and practice relaxation techniques
  • Consider anti-anxiety medication if recommended
  • Temperature might increase slightly during the procedure
  • Staying completely still is crucial to avoid retakes

Safety Precautions

  • Remove ALL metal items, including:
    • Jewelry (visible and hidden)
    • Body piercings
    • Toe rings and belly buttons rings
  • Avoid wearing:
    • Makeup
    • Nail polish
    • Hair products
    • Antiperspirants
    • Sunscreen (many contain metals)

Important Considerations

  • Inform doctors about any tattoos (including cosmetic)
  • Tattoo ink can heat up and cause skin irritation
  • MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not radiation
  • Different from CT/CAT scans which use X-rays
  • No radiation exposure during an MRI

Remember to communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider before the procedure. They can address specific questions and ensure you're properly prepared for the scan.
