Water containing PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as "forever chemicals," has been linked to increased cancer rates according to recent research.

A study in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology found that PFAS-contaminated water was associated with up to a 33% increase in cancer incidence. The most affected cancers include:

  • Oral cavity/pharynx
  • Brain
  • Thyroid
  • Endocrine
  • Digestive system
  • Respiratory system

PFAS are found in approximately 45% of US drinking water supplies. These chemicals are used extensively in manufacturing for their water and stain-resistant properties, appearing in:

  • Fire extinguishing foam
  • Food packaging
  • Furniture and upholstery
  • Shampoos and cosmetics
  • Non-stick cookware
  • Paint and sealants

The chemicals persist in the environment for thousands of years and can remain in the human body for over three years. Beyond cancer, PFAS exposure can lead to:

  • Liver and kidney damage
  • Reproductive health issues
  • Developmental delays in children
  • Increased obesity risk
  • Altered cholesterol levels

To reduce PFAS exposure:

  1. Check your local water quality report for PFAS monitoring
  2. Install a water filtration system designed to remove PFAS
  3. Avoid non-stick cookware and fast food packaging
  4. Minimize use of products containing PFAS

While complete avoidance of PFAS is unlikely due to their widespread presence, these steps can help reduce exposure. The EPA will begin regulating six common PFAS in drinking water starting in 2029.

The study, while preliminary, suggests the need for further research into PFAS-cancer connections and highlights the importance of system-level changes to address this widespread contamination issue.
