Multiple respiratory viruses, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, are currently surging across the United States, alongside a significant outbreak of norovirus. CDC data shows a steep increase in positive influenza cases since December, with overall respiratory illness activity at "high" levels.

Emergency department visits for COVID-19 remain lower compared to flu and RSV but are steadily increasing. RSV poses a particular threat to young children and older adults, causing up to 80,000 hospitalizations annually in children under 5.

A new strain of norovirus (GII.17[P17]) is responsible for 70% of recent outbreak cases, marking a shift from the previously common GII.4 strain. The virus spreads rapidly in enclosed spaces, particularly affecting cruise ships, nursing homes, schools, and similar facilities.

To protect yourself from these viruses:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu
  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly
  • Wear a well-fitting mask in high-risk situations
  • Avoid large gatherings during peak season
  • Stay home when sick
  • Consider antiviral medications (Paxlovid for COVID-19, Tamiflu for flu) if prescribed

While alcohol-based hand sanitizers help against respiratory viruses, thorough handwashing is more effective against norovirus due to its hardy nature. Although current infection rates are high, they generally align with typical seasonal patterns from previous years, excluding the pandemic period.

Those at highest risk for severe illness include:

  • Children under 6 months (especially for RSV)
  • Older adults
  • People with compromised immune systems
  • Individuals with underlying health conditions

The combination of these viruses may make it seem like everyone is getting sick, but following proper prevention measures can significantly reduce your risk of infection.
