Two local residents are highlighting the benefits of a nationwide scheme offering free gym memberships to Parkinson's patients, now in its fourth year of operation.

Currently serving 77 Ealing residents, the program is proving vital for symptom management of this progressive neurological condition.

Domenica Ciliberti, 79, who joined two years ago post-diagnosis, attends multiple weekly classes including stretch and mobility, Forever Fit, and Pilates at Acton Centre. She reports significant improvement in her movements, noting, "The more I exercise here, the slower the condition of Parkinson's is."

Clare Hotson, 67, diagnosed six years ago, shares similar positive experiences. Following a recent hospital stay, she's regained strength through regular classes. "I lost some muscle in my legs while in hospital, but it's come back again. I'm much stronger and can keep going for longer now," she explains.

Both women emphasize the program's social benefits. "I like doing activity with other people," says Clare. Domenica adds, "The instructors keep us happy and encourage us to continue even at home. The atmosphere is very lively."

Parkinson's, affecting around 153,000 people in the UK, is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally. It presents over 40 symptoms, ranging from tremors and pain to anxiety.

The program features:

  • Free access to fitness facilities for patients and carers
  • Specialized group classes
  • Online Synergy Dance classes for various mobility levels
  • Professional instruction and support

Medical clearance is advised for those with additional health conditions before starting exercise routines.

Participating facilities in Ealing include:

  • Acton Centre
  • Dormers Wells Leisure Centre
  • Northolt Leisure Centre
  • Brent Valley Golf Course and Fitness Centre

All facilities are managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Ealing Council.
