Free Fitness Memberships for Havering Residents with Parkinson's: Local Leisure Centres Launch Access Scheme
Residents living with Parkinson's across Havering can access free fitness memberships through a partnership between Everyone Active and Parkinson's UK at five local leisure centers: Central Park, Harrow Lodge, Noak Hill Sports Complex, Rainham, and Sapphire Ice and Leisure.
The initiative provides full access to gym facilities, swimming pools, and exercise classes for patients and up to three carers. Currently, 89 Havering residents benefit from this program, which is in its fourth year nationally.
Physical activity plays a crucial role in managing Parkinson's symptoms, which range from tremors and pain to anxiety. The condition affects approximately 153,000 people in the UK and is the fastest-growing neurological condition worldwide, with more than 40 identified symptoms.
Beneficial activities for Parkinson's patients include:
- Swimming
- Walking
- Dance
- Specialized Synergy Dance classes (available online)
- General gym facilities
The program creates an inclusive environment where people with Parkinson's and their support networks can exercise confidently. Medical clearance is recommended for those with additional health conditions before starting new exercise routines.
Local support comes from Havering Council, which aims to ensure all residents living with Parkinson's can access exercise facilities despite physical challenges. The initiative reflects growing medical evidence that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining quality of life for those with Parkinson's.
Members can participate in activities suitable for varying mobility levels, with professional support available at all facilities. The program particularly emphasizes the importance of continued physical activity during Parkinson's Awareness Month in April.
